The way a video was recorded doesn't have to be the way it's used. Depending on what you want to do with it, a video might need to be shorter, slower, cropped – sometimes, you need to split a video into two sections and put something else in the middle. This is common for certain types of popular video memes, like the Mortal Kombat "Fatality" meme format.

Splitting a video into two parts like this can take under a minute to do for free and online. Here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Find your video
  2. Split it in the Kapwing Studio
  3. Process & download

Step 1: Find your video

If you can find your video online or on a social media platform, you can upload it to Kapwing and split it into two sections – it's that simple. On Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube, right-click on the video while it's playing and choose "Copy Video Link" or "Copy Video Link at Current Time." If you're using your phone, find the Share button and choose "Copy link." Now you're ready to make any splits, cuts, and trims your video needs.

You can also upload any video file you already have saved on your device. Just make sure you know where the file is located in your file browser or camera roll so you can access it easily.

Step 2: Split it in the Kapwing Studio

With your video link copied, head over to Kapwing.com and click "Start editing." Or, if you're already signed in, click "New Project," then "Start with Studio." This will take you to the Kapwing Studio, where you can use all of Kapwing's video editing tools in one place. Now, you can paste the URL you copied or press "Click to upload" and grab a file that you have saved on your device. The video will be uploaded to the Studio in just a few seconds.

Once your video is fully uploaded to the Studio, you're ready to split it into separate sections. Start by clicking the "Duplicate Scene" button on the left side of the screen– it looks like two stacked rectangles on the upper edge of the scene's thumbnail image. Now, click on your video in the first scene and choose "Trim" from the right-hand menu. Drag the end button to the place you'd like to cut the first section of your video.

Now, select your second scene and trim the other half of the video – but this time, drag the left-hand button to where you want the second section of the video to begin. To add something in between the two parts, select "Add Scene" and drag the new scene in between the two sections you split. You can add anything to this new scene, from videos & GIFs to text cards & freeze frames.

Step 3: Process & download

Once your video has been uploaded to the Kapwing Studio, just click the red "Publish" button in the top right corner. Kapwing will work quickly your video will be ready to download in a matter of seconds.

When your video is finished processing, click “Download” from the right side of the screen. Here, you can also log in using your Facebook or Google account to remove the Kapwing watermark for free, if you haven't done so already. If you're using an iOS device to download a video, you might need to use the Kapwing mobile app from the App Store.
